George Stevenson was appointed Motherwell manager in April 1946 after a long and illustrious career as a player at Fir Park. John ‘Sailor’ Hunter had recommended to the board that George Stevenson take over as manager when he himself found the dual role of secretary/manager to onerous. George had a highly successful ten years as ‘Well manager, during his tenure his team won the League Cup in 1950 and of course the Scottish Cup in 1952. In 1947 Motherwell played the longest match in Scottish football history when they were eventually beaten by Hibernian in the Scottish Cup semi-finals after 62 minutes of extra time. The winning goal was scored by Hugh Howie of Hibs in the 152nd minute of the game. He had of course also suffered the heart break of losing the 1951 Scottish Cup Final.
Lowlights were rare under the guidance of Stevenson that was of course but the club did suffer their first ever relegation, although we were back in the top tier twelve months later. George had taken charge of Scotland’s under 23’s against England in 1955. Later that year in May, he handed in his resignation and ended a long relationship with Motherwell FC. He did on many occasions return to Fir Park to watch his son-in-law feature for the club, he went by the name of Jim Forrest. Sadly ‘Well’s most capped player for sixty years died aged 85 in 1990.
