Goalkeeper, Aaron Chapman arrived at Motherwell on the 7th October 2020. Backup keeper Scott Fox suffered an injury and was ruled out for most of the season so Englishman Chapman arrived to provide competition to Trevor Carson. ‘Well boss Stephen Robinson described him as “experienced cover and competition to Trevor Carson”.
Initially it seemed like a shrewd piece of business as Carson suffered an injury in a match versus Ross County and Aaron quickly made his debut coming on as a substitute in a fantastic 4-0 win over Ross County.
Standing at an impressive 6’ 8” he was like a skyscraper between the sticks, a really imposing presence. He also liked to gallivant from the box and take up the sweeper keeper role. Despite having some impressive attributes his decision making at times could be somewhat questionable and despite his large frame the downside to that was he was easily beaten by low balls. Despite enjoying a short run in the side as number one another keeper arrived to help alleviate the keeper crisis in the shape of former Millwall player Jordan Archer who wouldn’t have to wait too long to be installed as first choice.
Aarons last outing for Motherwell was in a disastrous New Year Derby (2nd January 2021) where Keith Lasley took charge of first team affairs after manager Stephen Robinson had resigned a few days earlier. It proved to be a forgettable performance as the side fell to a 3-0 defeat in South Lanarkshire with Chapmans performance leaving a lot to be desired.
After the arrival of new boss Graham Alexander, Aaron quickly dropped down the pecking order as a new keeper arrived, this time Liam Kelly arrived on loan from QPR. Chapman vanished from the first team scene entirely as young goalie Peter Morrison was preferred as backup.
Chapman left the club at the end of the season but he was quickly snapped up by English League one side Gillingham.
