Midfielder, John Davies signed for Motherwell in 1999 from Ayr United for an undisclosed fee, it was his brother Billy who was managing the club at the time that brought John to Fir Park, he had already signed their brother in law John Spencer earlier in the season making it a real family affair. John had spent most of his career in Scotland having played for Clydebank, St Johnstone, Airdrieonians and Ayr United. He actually had a brief spell in Sweden with a club called Jonkoping where his brother had recommended him as his replacement. Most fans felt underwhelmed by the signing as the club had been digging deep in adding some real quality to the ranks as chairman John Boyle looked to make the Steelmen the third force in Scottish football, it irked many fans that the manager just added his brother to help boost his career. John failed to make any real impact with the club and became a target of the boo boys which led to him terminating his contract on the 1st December 2000. After his playing days came to an end he would become a qualified football agent and enjoyed a coaching role in the MLS under Spencer at the Portland Timbers.
