Stephen Hendrie

Left full back Stephen Hendrie joined Motherwell on loan on the 31st January 2018, he had massive boots to fill in that he was a direct replacement for Stevie Hammell who had decided to hang up his boots to take on an internal coaching role within the clubs youth setup.

Earlier in his career, Stephen had come through the ranks at Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton Accies where he made over 100 first team appearances, an impressive feat considering he was only 20 years old, he was snapped up by West Ham United but he was unable to break into the first team fold in London and he was farmed out on loan to both Blackburn Rovers and Southend United before joining the latter on a permanent basis.

His time at Fir Park was somewhat unfulfilling as he struggled to impose himself into first team proceedings. Hendrie made his debut against Partick Thistle in a 1-1 draw where he was hooked at half time in a lacklustre performance, he wouldn’t reappear until late March despite first appearing for the club in early February, on his return he did put in good performances against both halves of the Old Firm where he came on as a sub on both occasions where both matches ended in draws.

Stephen only made a meagre six appearances for the club, he will perhaps be best remembered by the ‘Well fans for his untimely status on social media where he was cladded in Celtic colours celebrating an Old Firm victory, this of course coming weeks before the Steelmen would meet them in the 2018 Scottish Cup Final, despite helping the club finish the season strongly with wins over Partick Thistle and his former employers Hamilton he would ultimately miss out on the final.

Hendrie had been capped by Scotland at U17, U19 and U21 levels.
