Iain Russell started his career as a youth with Rangers, but after a number of years in the reserves he was given a free transfer having failed to make a first team appearance in Govan. From there Terry Butcher quickly snapped him up in the summer of 2002. His career with Motherwell began brightly seeing him net in a friendly against Arbroath and then scoring on a regular basis for the reserves, his potential was their to see. He finally made his debut in September when Motherwell travelled to Tynecastle to play Hearts, the final score was a 4-2 defeat. In January 2003 he was allowed to join Dumbarton on loan to aid his development but at the end of the season he was allowed to leave the club.
Russell managed to carve out a good career in the Scottish lower leagues serving the likes of Morton, Livingston, Airdrieonians, Queen of the South amongst others where he managed to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.
