Billy Thomson started his senior career in Maryhill with Partick Thistle. His career began in 1975 and he won two under-21 caps for Scotland while at Firhill, he would only make a solitary appearance for the Jags as he had the unenviable task of trying to dispatch Alan Rough from the number one jersey. Billy signed for Motherwell in 1991 for £50,000 from Dundee United, he was signed because the club had a fall out with Ally Maxwell over a new contract and it seemed that the popular keeper would be moving on to pastures new. His career at Fir Park would see him battle it out with Sieb Dijkstra, in all competitions, Thomson made 59 first appearances. In 1994 he moved to Rangers and finished his playing career with Dundee. After his playing days came to an end he stayed in the game as a coach serving Rangers and Kilmarnock.
