Gordon Marshall

Gordon MarshallGordon Marshall began his career with East Stirlingshire and then moved onto East Fife, where he enjoyed four and a half seasons before he moved onto Falkirk. He then joined Celtic where he remained on the fringes of the team until a move to Kilmarnock in January 1998 for £150,000.

At Rugby Park, he helped the club to achieve a third placed finish in the SPL and sampled some European football, the veteran keeper who had served Killie so diligently was released in 2003.

His arrival at Fir Park raised a few eyebrows as he was 39 at the time when Motherwell manager Terry Butcher secured his services. He made his debut in the opening game of the 2003/04 season against Dundee but an error from Gordon allowed Gavin Rae to slot home as the Dens Park outfit went on to secure a 0-3 win at Fir Park, going forward however he proved to be a solid edition to a young ‘Well side that had struggled throughout the previous season his experience between the sticks certainly was an upgrade in the goalkeeping department from the previous campaign.

His notable performances for the club came in a League Cup Semi Final against Hearts at Easter Road where he pulled off a number of impressive stops which kept the side in the tie, he topped this with his remarkable performance against Celtic in a game which is effectively known as ‘Skippy Sunday’ Helicopter Sunday’ or ‘Black Sunday’ dependant on the team you support, despite conceding one goal he managed to pull off numerous saves before a late double from Scott McDonald won the game for the Steelmen and cost Celtic the league title.

Marshall played in goal in the 2005 League Cup Final where the side unfortunately lost 5-1 to Rangers at Hampden, Gordon was critical of his own performance in the game and refused to collect his runners up medal.

Gordon would become the oldest player to represent the club when he turned out at the age of 41 against Celtic on the opening day of the 2005/06 season, but injury essentially put paid to his playing career at Fir Park and he wouldn’t play any more first team games for the club, but he did enjoy two spells as the Motherwell goalkeeping coach, he also was employed with Hibernian and Aberdeen in a similar capacity at different points.

The Edinburgh born keeper had won a few honours during his career, he had been capped once by Scotland in 1992, won a First Division medal with Falkirk and the 1995 Scottish Cup with Celtic. He was a League Cup runner up with Celtic, Kilmarnock and Motherwell.

Football certainly runs in the Marshall family as his father also named Gordon was on the books at Hearts and Newcastle as a goalkeeper while his brother Scott came from the ranks at Highbury with Arsenal and he was a defender.
